It happened on the day school started after a heavenly two months of summer holidays. Shankar refused to wake up at 6 am. He wanted to dream more about his visit to his grandparents’ home. They lived in the picturesque city of Mysore in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. He particularly wanted to remember his two trips to the Bandipur National Park. It was a magical forest in the shade of the Nilgiri mountains which always seemed to have their heads in the clouds! Shankar had been lucky to see the stately Asian elephant, the Mugger crocodile, the four-horned antelope, and the leopard. The tiger had been elusive. 揘ext time,?Shankar told himself happy at the thought. He wanted 搉ext time?to be now! But first, his mother and then his father kept talking in his ear till he was forced to get up. Have you ever had anyone droning into your ear while you tried to sleep? It can be terrible. However, once Shankar saw his friends in the school bus, he felt happy to be back from his dream. When Shankar returned home in the afternoon he saw his mother standing at the door. That was strange. He wondered, 揥hy hasn抰 Amma gone to office today??When he saw the worried look on her face he felt a flash of fear. Amma gave him a tight hug and two kisses on the forehead. 揝hankar, I wanted to tell you myself. Your father had an accident while driving to office. The good news is that he will be out of hospital in two weeks. He will be absolutely fine. But I think it is time to get a driver for him. You and I shall select a fine young man to drive Appa carefully to office.? Amma抯 words calmed Shankar. He felt happy at the thought of helping out Appa. In the next few days he sat next to his mother while she interviewed several men for the post of chauffeur to Appa. They both decided on Raj. He was 30 years old and had a pleasant way of speaking. 揜aj will take good care of Appa,?Shankar thought. Finally, Appa returned from hospital. He told a worried Shankar that Raj had driven very carefully. A lot of exciting things happened on that Sunday. Raj抯 family came to stay with them in the small flat in their backyard. That抯 how Shankar met Raj抯 eight-year-old son Bablu. Bablu had a monkey face, with bright eyes and spiky hair. From the day he met Shankar, he became his fan. To eight-year-old Bablu, 11-year-old Shankar seemed to be a big boy. He would always follow Shankar around. Whenever Shankar looked up from the book he was reading, he would find Bablu抯 face staring at him through the window. While brushing his teeth he would often get confused when he saw another face staring back at him from the mirror! And when he walked back from the school bus stop in the afternoon, he would have two shadows ?one was his own and the other shadow was Bablu walking a few paces behind! Bablu did not go to school. Of course he was admitted to a local government school but he refused to go. He told Shankar shyly that the teachers only made them copy words from the blackboard. Since he had not learnt to read he could not understand anything that was written on the board. Shankar felt sorry for him. One Sunday, Shankar decided to ride his bicycle to his friend抯 house nearby. As he wheeled out his bicycle from the garage, he saw a strange sight. Bablu was sitting under a tree holding a book in his hands. Shankar tip-toed closer and discovered that Bablu was holding one of his books. What抯 more, Bablu was holding the book upside down. Since he could not read it, did not matter which way he held the book. Shankar took the book out of Bablu抯 hands and turned it the right side up. 揟his is how you are supposed to read,?he told Bablu in an affectionate tone. Two big tears rolled down Bablu抯 cheeks. He looked like a sad little monkey. Bablu told Shankar, 揑 want to be like you but I can抰 do anything.?The bicycle went back into the garage. Shankar walked back to the house. His parents were reading the newspapers over steaming cups of delicious south Indian filter coffee. Shankar told them they had to help Bablu get into a better school. It was not very easy to get Bablu admitted to a new school, because the time for admissions was over. But one principal looked at Bablu kindly and admitted him to her school. The next day, Bablu went to his new school a very proud boy ?wearing a brand new shirt, shorts and a tie! When Bablu returned from school he was a bit tearful. The other children in his class had teased him. He told Shankar, “They all said I am much older than them but in a smaller class. I don抰 want to go to school.”

Shankar said, 揇on抰 cry Bablu. I will teach you to read and write. Very soon you will be as good if not better than your classmates.?From the loft the older boy took out all the books and kids magazines that he had read years ago. The kids magazines were in Hindi and in English, and Shankar’s favourites were Chandamana, Champak, Twinkle and Target. There were fairy tale books, from the Grimms Brothers to Hans Christian Anderson. There were several volumes of Panchatantra for kids, 慚ahabharata for kids? And, best of all, he still had his entire collection of early reading books. These would be ideal for getting Bablu to practice his reading. 揝hankar thought to himself, 揟here is enough reading for kids here for Bablu to get over his fear of reading and writing.? Shankar went to the stationary shop which kept kids magazines, books, craft kits for kids in the 4-8 age group and worksheets for kids up to Class VIII. He bought two interesting worksheets. One worksheet taught the Hindi alphabet. Each letter had a picture of a bird, animal, eatable, flower or tree next to it. There was also a story attached to each letter. The English worksheet was also similar. Bablu had a great time colouring the apple while chanting A for apple. Shankar read out the story of William Tell and the apple. He also read stories from Hindi kids magazines like Champak and Chandamama and from English kids magazines like National Geographic Kids’ magazine. When he wanted to reward Bablu for working hard he would read from his favourite fairy tale book for kids. Two months later, Bablu returned from school with a beaming face. He kept his school bag on the chair and without eating his lunch ran to Shankar抯 school bus stop. The moment Shankar got off from the school bus Bablu hugged him hard. He rattled on, 揝hankar bhaiya, the principal praised me in the school assembly today. She told everyone that I am one of the best students in her school now! I have become the monitor of my class.? Shankar picked up Bablu and did a war dance right there and then. Now Bablu has another wish. He wants to work on the computer like Shankar. He wants to visit reading websites for kids, and he wants to play the online treasure hunt games that his Shankar bhaiya plays. Go for it, Bablu!

Kent Nelson was born in 1928 to Sven Nelson, a noted archaeologist, and Celestine Babcock Nelson, a spiritual medium. Celestine Nelson died under unknown circumstances shortly after Kent’s birth, and Kent became a tagalong for his globe-trotting father. In 1940, Sven and Kent were conducting a dig in the Valley of Ur in Mesopotamia when the younger Nelson stumbled upon an ancient sarcophagus containing the giant body of a stately being, Nabu the Wise. Upon opening the sarcophagus, Kent released poison gas which immediately slew his father. Nabu, a mystical Lord of Order originally from the planet Cilia, took pity on the boy and used his magic to block the grief from the young boy’s mind. Over the intervening months, Nabu schooled Kent Nelson in the ways of mysticism, teaching him to cast spells and fly. During this time, Kent Nelson aged years instead of weeks; he had grown to adulthood by late summer. Nelson had grown fond of Nabu, but the Lord of Order required one last act of Kent Nelson: the death of his own body. Nelson hesitated but Nabu removed the inhibitions he had placed on Nelson’s grief. In a rage, Nelson slew the old wizard. With his body destroyed, Nabu was revealed his true nature: an energy being, a millennia-old Lord of Order. Nabu presented Nelson with two gifts: a helm and an amulet. When Nelson wore the Helm, he was joined with Nabu who used his body as an agent against the Lords of Chaos (More Fun Comics #67, Secret Origins vol. 2 #23). Nelson then adopted the nom de guerre of Doctor Fate.
Fate’s first encounter upon his debut was with the sorcerer Wotan, an ancient wizard who had battled Nabu in a previous physical incarnation (All-Star Squadron #47). Wotan used both medieval magic and advanced technology to accomplish his goals of earthly conquest. In 1940, Wotan planned to destroy the Earth and had captured Inza Kramer, a student of Columbia University who was in Egypt. Fate rescued Kramer and defeated Wotan. When the two returned to America, Wotan assaulted them again, but was again defeated. To protect the world from Wotan, Fate put the ancient mage in a deep trance and buried him beneath the ground (More Fun Comics #56). Afterward, Fate and Kramer become lovers, and Fate shared the knowledge of his dual identity with her (More Fun Comics #66). Fate set up a base of operations in Salem, Massachusetts, residing in a doorless, windowless tower that only he could enter or leave. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Fate encountered the Spectre, another powerful magic-based hero, and the two defeated a effort to subvert military “magic” research on a gateway for otherworldly demons (Spectre Annual #1).

Later in 1940, Fate watched the unfolding events in Nazi Germany from his tower in Salem. Three American mystery-men, Batman, the Flash, and Green Lantern, lay captured by Adolph Hitler and his summoned Valkyries. Using the powerful magics at his command, Fate summoned four other mystery men and with them lay siege to the Nazi fleet invading England. The heroes then freed the captured comrades and pursued Hitler’s forces to America. There, with the aid of Superman, the heroes thwarted Hitler’s attempted assassination of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt. At Roosevelt’s behest, the heroes formed the Justice Society of America, of which Fate became a charter member (DC Special #29).

Early in 1941, Doctor Fate encountered a powerful scientist named Ian Karkull. Karkull had invented a device that allowed him to become a living shadow, immune to Fate’s magic. When Fate destroyed the device that allowed the transformations, Karkull was defeated, trapped in his shadow form (More Fun Comics #69). Shortly thereafter, Wotan used his powerful magics to summon Karkull to free Wotan himself from his trance. Together, the two established a base in the Arctic, building weaponry to wage war on Earth. Fate tracked them to Arctic, destroying the city, but the two villains escaped (More Fun Comics #70).

In July 1941, Karkull gained a means to view the future, allowing him to identify the next eight successive Presidents of the United States. Selecting an elite cadre of super-villains to assist him, Karkull moved to assassinate each of these future statesmen, thereby disrupting American history. The Justice Society, including Doctor Fate, intervened. Only one of Karkull’s associates, Wotan, was successful in killing his target. (The identity of his target, a young boy, has never been revealed.) In a final confrontation with Karkull, the Spectre destroyed the villains shadow form, bathing the assembled heroes in a bizarre radiation. This radiation, in time, would serve to extend the lives and vitality of the assembled heroes well into their advanced years (All-Star Squadron Annual #3). Karkull was never heard from again.

In 1942, Kent Nelson became more and more at odds with the sharing of his existence with Nabu, the Lord of Order within the helmet. When the Spectre was captured by the extra-dimensional sorcerer Kulak, Nelson allowed Kulak to capture the Helm. When Kulak donned the Helm and was confronted with Nabu and the loss of his own third eyesight, the villain was flung into limbo, taking Nabu and the helmet with him. Kent Nelson then resumed the identity of Dr. Fate with much more limited powers, and wearing a truncated helm (More Fun Comics #72, All-Star Squadron #28-29).

Shortly thereafter, Fate encounter Mister Who, a powerful scientist who developed the “Z” Solution that bestowed upon him tremendous strength and the ability to grow to gigantic proportions (More Fun Comics #73). Mister Who became a recurrent adversary for Fate, dogging him individually and during his membership in the All-Star Squadron (More Fun Comics #74, 79, All-Star Squadron #51-55).

By 1943, Nelson grew weary of the War and left the Justice Society (last appearance: All-Star Comics #21). Shortly thereafter, he sought a more human existence and entered medical school, using his advanced knowledge from Nabu to accelerate his education (More Fun Comics #85). For some undisclosed period of time before the end of World War II, Fate interned with Dr. Emmett Roland, a famous surgeon. To what extent Nelson pursued his medical career beyond the level of intern, if at all, is unknown.

Virtually nothing is known of Doctor Fate’s life in the years immediately following World War II. At some point he married Inza Kramer and she took up residence in Fate’s tower in Salem. He abandoned the practice of medicine and returned to his father’s field of study: archeology. At some point during these years, Fate also retrieved the Helm of Nabu and resumed his co-existence with the Lord of Order.

When the Justice Society reformed in 1963, Fate returned to active membership (Justice League of America #21). Privately, he supervised a series of archeological expeditions funded by chemical magnate and colleague, Rex Tyler (Hourman). The two worked together as mystery-men as well, defeating Solomon Grundy (Showcase #55) and the new Psycho-Pirate (Showcase #56). Throughout the next twenty years, Doctor Fate became a steadfast member of the JSA, participating in virtually every case. Neither he nor Inza aged during this time, held youthful by Fate’s magic.

A key element in the successful generation of the true potential of Fate was the triad. However, Nabu’s desire to be the dominant force precluded him from allowing a third person, notably Inza, into the joint entity formed by himself and Kent Nelson. In the early 1980s, Earth entered the “Kali Yuga,” a time of great flux in reality’s mystical forces, and said to herald the final Age of Man. This challenge put Fate directly into play against the Lords of Chaos and forced Nabu, for the first time, to allow Inza into the Fate entity. This combination allowed progress in pushing back the tide of Chaos foretold in the ancient prophecies (The Flash vol. 1 #305-313).

Shortly after the Crisis on Infinite Earths, life in Salem changed. In events yet untold, the strain of the Chaos war and the Crisis led Inza to suicide and aged Kent Nelson to a point closer to his chronological age. Nabu recognized the loss of his long-time host and allowed Kent Nelson to die, choosing Eric Strauss as a new host (Doctor Fate limited series #1-4). Over time, the new hosts proved unsuccessful; Eric Strauss was killed by Darkseid’s forces (Doctor Fate #12), and his co-host, Linda Strauss, also succumbed to the strain. During this time, the Nelsons enjoyed an afterlife existence in which they appeared to live out normal lives, even raising children. They sacrificed this existence, however, and returned to the land of the living to again join with Nabu as Doctor Fate. In their second incarnation, Inza became the dominant form, giving Fate a feminine appearance. Ultimately, through mechanisms as yet undescribed, the two began forming the joint male Fate again.

During the crisis known as Zero Hour, initiated by Parallax, Doctor Fate led the Justice Society in its initial strike on Extant. The resulting battled cleaved the Fate entity in two, flinging the Helm and Amulet of Nabu to the far ends of the globe, and aging Kent and Inza Nelson to extreme senescence (Zero Hour #3). In the aftermath, the artifacts of Nabu were recovery by Jared Stevens, who assumed the mantle of Fate, and the Nelsons once again entered the afterlife (Fate #0). Whether the Nelsons are truly dead or will ever return again remains unknown.

Doctor Fate is a fictional succession of DC Comics sorcerers who appear within the DC Universe. The original version was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Howard Sherman, and first appeared in More Fun Comics #55 (May 1940). Beginning in the 1960’s, the character was also a member of Golden Age all-star group, the Justice Society of America.

Initially, Doctor Fate was Kent Nelson, the the son of an archaeologist who died discovering the tomb of the mystical being Nabu. The orphaned boy was trained by the ancient entity in the arts of magic. However, after the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline, DC introduced several new versions of Doctor Fate. These included: Eric and Linda Strauss, a man and woman who could merge to form Doctor Fate; Inza Nelson, Kent Nelson’s reincarnated wife; a mercenary named Jared Stevens who used Nelson’s weapons but called himself simply Fate; a resurrected Hector Hall, the son of Justice Society of America members Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and Kent V. Nelson, grand-nephew of the original,[1] who begins his journey as Doctor Fate in Las Vegas, with no awareness of his family’s connection to mysticism.

The revivals prior to Kent V. Nelson were relatively short-lived. Doctor Fate’s appearances in other media and comics set outside the continuity of the DC Universe (for instance, in the DC animated universe) tend to be of the original Golden Age Kent Nelson incarnation

FATE is an action role-playing game similar to Diablo and Diablo II. The dungeon and treasures found within are randomized, as are the monsters. Certain items contain “sockets,” into which the player can put special gems in order to customize the item. FATE is rated E10 for everyone 10 and up because there is to mild violence. The score uses classical guitar and middle eastern influences much as the Diablo series does. The game takes place in the town of Grove, where the “Dungeon Gate” leads would-be adventurers to multiple levels of fame, fortune, and death. The player assumes the role of one of these adventurers, and is assigned a randomized quest at the beginning of the game that will take them to approximately the 50th level of the dungeon. Along the way, randomized side-quests are made available to the player by the townspeople of Grove. These are sometimes fetch quests, though they often require the player to kill off all enemies of a certain type on a certain floor of the dungeon or dispatch of an enemy boss. Upon completion of a side-quest, the player can return to the townsperson who gave it to him, and receive a reward of Fame Points, Experience Points and gold. Sometimes a valuable item is also given as part of the reward for completing a side-quest. When the character gains enough experience points, they are promoted to the next level, and given five Attribute points as well as two Skill points. Attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Vitality and Magic) allow the character to wield stronger weapons, armor and spells, while Skills denote proficiency at certain things (”Sword Skill,” “Charm Magic Skill,” “Critical Hit Skill”). There are no set character classes in FATE, allowing players to customize to their hearts’ content. Additionally, the player is rewarded with “Fame” points for completing side-quests and defeating enemy bosses, which contribute to the gaining of Fame levels. Players can always decide if they want to keep the equipment they were sent to retrieve, or if the potential fame, experience and gold are more important. Elite and Legendary equipment cannot be equipped unless the player is of a certain Fame level, and gaining a level of Fame yields four Skill points. Finally, a denizen of Grove, specifically a bard, can be paid to increase the character’s Fame, allowing savvy players (in the game’s own words) to buy Skill points. Unfortunately, gold is hard to come by as shops buy for 1/8th of their selling price. In addition to the various vendors and quest-givers in the town, there is also a Healer, who will bring the character’s health points up to full capacity free of charge, and an Enchanter who, for a fee, will try (sometimes unsuccessfully) to add an enchatment or a socket to an item of the player’s choosing, but be warned he may delete all of the items enchantments so you have to start over. Screen shot from the game, FATEThe player is accompanied by a pet, which can initially be chosen as a dog or cat. This pet fights on behalf of the player, can carry items, and can be sent back to town in order to sell unwanted findings (though it cannot complete fetch quests). The player can transform the pet into various forms by feeding it fish, which can be caught in various bodies of water or purchased from vendors. Some of these transformations are temporary, some can be made permanent. FATE is rendered fully in 3D, allowing the player to zoom in and out of the action as necessary. FATE offers no multiplayer elements. While this absence has been criticized by some, others find the single player feature only to be a draw. If the player completes the main quest they received at the beginning of the game, they are given the option to retire the current character and start play over again with a descendant of the first character. The descendant gets various perks and bonuses, including one item that is handed down from its ancestor. If this family heirloom has any magical enchatments on it, they will be augmented by 25% every time the item is passed down. If a weapon or piece of armor is passed down, its damage done or defensive capabilities will be increased as well. If a player chooses not to retire, they can advance their characters and go as deep into the dungeon as they like.
